Youth Brass 2018

Youth Brass 2017

Youth Brass 2016

Saturday 25th June saw the annual Youth Brass celebration concert, given by the two youth bands of Coleshill,  (Coleshill Beginner Brass & Coleshill Youth Brass).  The venue, for this year, was the beautiful, Hartshill Church.
The concert featured a varied and exciting programme of music from the beginners conducted by Sally Fagg, featuring beautifully played hymn tunes, arranged by Alan Fernie and traditional airs.  Their progress was evident in their playing, given that many of these youngsters only started in September 2015!
The second half saw Coleshill Youth Brass performing concert music for the first time, after their recent win at the Battle of the Bands contest in Chesterfield.  In addition to the set of music, which formed their contest programme, they also premiered a new arrangement of the hymn “The Supreme Sacrifice, “  which was arranged and conducted by 17 year old band member, Daniel Fenner.

Youth Brass 2009

What an event! Youth Brass has grown in to a real celebration of music making and a fantastic showcase for the whole organisation.

In terms of planning and preparation Youth Brass is probably second only to Fire & Brass in the amount of work that goes in to the event. Arriving at Coleshill Primary School at 9.00am work began to prepare the venue for the event. Although the event was to start at 3.00pm this had to be completed by 1.00pm as pianist Peter Elliott was to arrive to rehearse solos with a number of performers.

At 3.00pm, with everything ready and rehearsals complete, Youth Brass 2009 – the recital began. A good number of people were in the audience to support over 20 members of CbB and CYB perform solos and duets. A variety of abilities (Grade 1 through to Grade 8) and ages performed and all must be congratulated on their performances and the nerve they showed to perform not only in front of an audience but also in front of each other. The recital concert is a great opportunity for these musicians to show their talent and gain valuable performing experience.

With the recital finishing on time, performers and audience were then treated to a fabulous picnic tea prepared by Wendy Donnelly and helpers. Thanks Wendy and all band members who contributed to provide the picnic tea, it was greatly appreciated by everyone and provided a nice break to allow band members, friends and families a chance to socialise and congratulate the performers on their efforts in the recital.

At 6.00pm, with tea finished and cleared away, Youth Brass 2009 – the concert started. CbB took the stage to demonstrate how much progress they have made. The band of 20 players played a programme of 10 pieces in variety of styles led by Sally Wood and assisted in the conducting by Matthew Alder.

After a short break CYB took centre stage and wowed the large audience with their increasingly difficult repertoire of music. Playing well rehearsed pieces that formed the basis of their prize winning performance at Butlins combined with a number of new pieces that are to be included in their Fire & Brass programme, CYB showed they are continuing to progress at an amazing rate.

Before the big finale the awards were made. For CbB Christopher Thomas was presented with the effort award and Kieran Witts the achievement award and for CYB Nicole Pudge received the effort award and James Harle the achievement award. It was also announced that Kieran Witts, Sophie Price, Jamie Smith, Hannah Thomas, Alex Powell-Tuck and James Powell-Tuck would be promoted from CbB to CYB. Well done to them and to every member of both bands.

The finale saw both CbB and CYB joined on stage by senior band members to perform the massed band finale of Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory. Over 60 musicians on stage performing together – what a great end to a great event!

Thanks to everyone who supported Youth Brass and the young musicians of CbB and CYB. I know all the members and their parents really appreciated the efforts of everyone who helped make it a fantastic day. Thank you.
