After last years 4th place Coleshill Town Band this time walked away from the Wychavon Festival of Brass with 2nd place, a trophy, a £250 cheque and also the best percussion section prize!
The day begun at 11.00am in Coleshill itself as the band played a ‘mini concert’ to a small but appreciative audience. This free concert enabled the band to run through the contest programme. An informal welcome to the audience gave way to the serious business of performing the 20 minute programme of – ‘Symphony Of The Seas’, ‘Hamabe No Uta’, ‘Yellow Submarine’, ‘Adagio from Spartacus’, ‘Conquest Of Paradise’. This run through was very useful as it enabled the band to practice the movements between pieces that the sea-themed programme required. After the serious business of the concert programme the band relaxed and played a few light, audience-friendly numbers to bring the concert to a close.
After a photo in the town hall, the band made its way to Droitwich. Unlike last years rush to the contest venue, this time we arrived in good time and were able to take our time preparing, registering and, as we were the last band to perform, setting the contest stage to our exact requirements. With this done, we took to the contest arena and, playing to a full hall, produced a faultless display. Well done to all band members but especially to Sally as soloist, and Simon as scriptwriter. Thank you. Now we had only a short wait until the results and what a joy it was to hear the words ‘in 2nd place with 180 points the band that played number…10, Coleshill Town Band’. Cue a cheer, loud enough to be heard in Coleshill. After collecting the trophy and adjudicators remarks, a celebratory band photo and a trip to a local pub completed a very satisfactory day!
